Updates

Oreo has his weekly check up this morning.  The vet did a blood sugar test with a result of 37.  They wanted to keep him for observation today in case he dropped lower.  I just stopped by and picked him up on my way home a few minutes ago.

No more insulin injections.  He goes back in Friday for another blood check... vet thinks there is a strong chance he quickly went into remission!

As for me... more basal testing.  Reduced my early morning rate and am still waking up lower, but not as low..  Maybe I'll go into remission too after 27 years...

Oreo's blood sugar was 126 at this morning's vet checkup.  Reduced his Lantus dosage to 1 unit, twice daily.  Forgot if I mentioned earlier both cats are now on an all-canned diet, so very little carbohydrate being consumed.

Also had my doctor visit (not at the vet's though)... took blood for my HA1C and checking microalbumulin.

Day 2, and Already Results

Noticed a couple things today... Oreo bounded up the stairs this morning when I woke up.  He hasn't done that in several months.  He's also been playing with the various cat toys, and in general showing a lot more energy than usual.  Guess the symptoms were much worse than I had realized.. these first two injections have already showed a big difference!

He's taking very well to the canned wet food.  Even stuff that is left out overnight he'll still gobble up.  Belle is a little more particular, I think she needs a little more transition time, so I've still been leaving out a very small amount of dry food mixed in.

Picked up some of the shorter - 5mm - syringes today.  My wife will have to give him his injections this weekend while I'm gone, and thought these would be easier for her to use if he won't let her get a good pinch of skin and she has to resort to a quick jab to the hindquarter while distracting him with some treats!

Made my appointment with my primary care doctor next week.  He'll have the retinopathy news from my eye exam a few weeks ago.  My endocrinologist should have them too by now, but I don't see her again until early winter.  My 90 day blood sugar average is hovering around 160, but my 30 day average is closer to 150.

Diagnosis Day

Got the call from the vet's office this morning. Not kidney disease, but diabetes.  At least it's something treatable.. I can deal with that.  The vet wrote the prescription for Lantus and syringes and Oreo got his first injection this evening.  At least it was amusing to think of Oreo wandering around the house with my old pump strapped to his back!
